How to Hold on to More of Your Cash this Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and often, a flurry of activities that can leave us feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and financially strained. In our last live conversation for the year, Jackie and  Djanka shared valuable insights on how to approach the holidays with mindfulness, emphasizing the importance of intentionality, creativity, and the true spirit of giving.

Shifting Perspectives and Breaking the Comparison Trap

The conversation began with the importance of setting aside one’s ego and avoiding the comparison game. Comparing our lives to others, especially in the age of social media, can lead to unnecessary pressure and stress. As Djanka wisely pointed out, everyone is dealing with their own set of challenges, and we often underestimate the difficulties others face.

The key takeaway is to refrain from comparing and focus on appreciating the uniqueness of our journey. Social media presents curated snapshots, not the full reality, and getting caught up in these illusions can take away from the genuine joy of the season.

Mindful Gift-Giving and Conscious Consumption

The conversation then shifted to the topic of gift-giving. Jackie and Djanka highlighted the significance of thoughtful, intentional gifts over excessive, materialistic ones. Instead of succumbing to the dopamine rush of consumerism, they suggested alternative, meaningful gifts.

Djanka shared a heartwarming experience of creating coupons for her friends, offering services like babysitting. This not only provided a practical gift but also created memorable experiences and strengthened connections. The idea of sharing one’s strengths, whether it be baking, crafting, or any other skill, was emphasized as a powerful way to give without breaking the bank.

Djakna expanded on the concept of conscious consumerism, advocating for supporting small businesses. She urged our live community to consider the environmental impact of their purchases and opt for recyclable, sustainable gifts. The conversation emphasized the long-lasting value of experiences, such as spa days or outings, over material possessions.

Time as a Precious Gift and Supporting Small Businesses

The discussion touched on the value of time as a precious gift. Djanka encouraged listeners to donate their time to community events or offer coupons for services. Highlighting the ongoing struggles of small businesses, especially in the wake of the pandemic, they also urged consumers to be intentional and support local establishments.

Djanka shared her experience as the co-chair of the West Queen West Business Improvement Association, emphasizing the importance of supporting businesses that contribute to the vibrancy of a neighborhood. Shopping with intention and being conscious of the environmental and economic impact of our choices emerged as crucial themes.

Final advice

With a reflection on the true spirit of Christmas,  Jackie and Djanka stressed the importance of self-awareness and staying true to one’s values, even in the face of societal expectations. They emphasized that the most meaningful gifts are often free—acts of kindness, time spent with loved ones, and genuine connections.

As the holiday season approaches, the message is clear: approach it with mindfulness, embrace the joy of giving, and remember that the most valuable gifts are not found in a store but in the moments we share with others. So, let’s celebrate with intention, make conscious choices, and usher in the new year with a brighter way of being.
